About Buffale
What's Buffale?
Buffale is a free daily word game about Buffalo, New York sports. Every day there's a new five-letter answer, and you get six guesses to crack it. It can be anything from Buffalo sports: the Bills, Sabres, UB, the Braves and other Buffalo teams, plus the players, coaches, venues and moments that go with them, past or present, pro or college. Tiles change color to tell you which letters you've got right. A hint unlocks after your first guess, and you can take it anytime. Come back tomorrow for a new one.
How to play
- Guess the day's five-letter Buffalo sports answer in six tries.
- Type five letters and press Enter. After each guess the tiles change color to show how close you were.
- A Hint button unlocks after your first guess. Use it whenever you like, your result notes it if you do.
- There's a new puzzle every day. Your streak and stats save to this device, so there's no account and nothing to sign up for.
Right letter, right spot. This letter is in the answer, exactly where you put it.
Right letter, wrong spot. This letter is in the answer, but somewhere else.
Not in the answer. This letter is not in today's answer at all.
Any five letters is a legal guess. Buffale does not check your guess against a dictionary, since plenty of Buffalo answers are names, not words. A typo still costs you a guess, so read your word back before you press Enter.
Why Buffale exists
Mostly because it could. Buffalo has enough sports history to fill a word game several times over, a daily puzzle is a low-stakes way to keep some of it in circulation, and the domain was available. That is the whole case.
It's built by hand, with no game engine and no site builder. The board, the animations and the sound are all custom.

Is Buffale accessible to screen reader and colorblind players?
Yes. Every menu, including Help and Stats, works from a keyboard, guess results are read aloud by screen readers as you play, and a High-contrast tile markers toggle in Help adds a shape to every present and absent tile, key, and board recap, so the feedback never depends on color alone.
Can I add Buffale to my home screen?
Yes. On iPhone, tap the Share icon in your browser, then "Add to Home Screen." On Android and most other browsers, look for "Install" or "Add to Home Screen" in the browser menu.
